SLEEPLESS IN SINGAPORE

cover

For me, cities during the day can be amazing places, however fast forward a few hours and they become absolutely spectacular! Singapore definitely falls into this as it’s somewhere that I really like during the day but love from sunset onwards. Capturing images during the golden and blue hour gives any photographer the chance to show somewhere at its best, especially when you are able to create the perfect balance between the natural blue tones of the sky and the artificial lights so often found in big cities – what you create is sometimes really magical.

After growing up in a small village in the UK, Singapore is a whole new world – the chaos, the architecture, the food and the frantic pace of most that live there. I called this post “Sleepless in Singapore” simply because I rarely get any sleep when I’m there! It’s one of those places that if you leave your hotel room at 2am, you can shoot all the way through until the next day (and still feel like you want to do more, once you’ve had a very large coffee!). The roads are empty and there are only a few people around, pretty much leaving you with the whole city to yourself, something that could never happen during the day.

The images here were taken over a 12 hour period, I obviously took many more images but I felt this gave you a good idea of the light available during these times, and how you can make a place look different depending upon the time you choose to shoot it – busy, futuristic or serene.

I have been fortunate enough to visit Singapore on three different occasions and each time I always find new and exciting things to shoot, old images to recapture at different times of the day and new ideas to try out. For the first time visitor my advice would be to start by walking around the Marina Bay, this pathway gives you a glimpse of some of the best Singapore has to offer and will help you plan where you want to shoot later in your trip, or if you just can’t wait – start shooting straight away!

If you have any questions about the settings used to take these photographs or would simply like to know more about the location, please leave a comment and I will respond as soon as possible.
