AmaSEAing Puglia: Bari, Polignano, Monopoli, Taranto!

Sometimes it takes very little to rediscover places dear to your heart with new eyes; it takes very little to be amazed all over again and Puglia, this wonderful homeland of mine, never ever ordinary, will always keep reminding me of the importance of my roots.
I will show you Bari in a new light: that of half past six in the morning, of the lamps of the fishermen returning to port after a night at sea, of large and small weighing scales, of the smell of the sea, of hands marked by a lifetime of work, of fishing nets to be repaired, of wet boots and damp cloths, of the first light of dawn, of women who wait for their men and of waves that are always the same, yet at the same time always different. I’m not a tourist, I can never manage to be one and I don’t believe I’ll ever will be. I travel with neither map nor destination, I never ask about famous places but always ask about places dear to people’s hearts. And Molo San Nicola is just that; one of those places in which you breathe the seamless passage of time from past to future, in which you are welcome even with a reflex camera in your hands and green eyes wide with curiosity.

If you are in the Bari area, take the time to visit this little jetty in the early morning; you will enjoy the breathtaking sunrise over the sea, the sights and sounds of the things I listed above and much more. A must for all Lovers of Photography.

Twenty miles further south, on the Adriatic coast, there is place so magical that you wonder if what you are seeing is real or whether you are dreaming it all. I’m talking about Polignano a Mare, one of my “places in the world”, that is to say where I always feel at home. Polignano will bewitch you like a mermaid.

Let yourself be enchanted by the poems written by Guido ”il Flâneur” in the little old town centre; they will provide you with some magical images. Every year, they are erased and replaced by new quotations: one further reason to make a return visit. The birthplace of the famous singer songwriter Domenico Modugno welcomes you with open arms! Talking of whom, if you are looking for a fashionable place to eat lunch or dinner, I recommend ‘L’osteria di Chichibio’, located just a few metres from the statue devoted to Modugno.

Following the Bari coast southwards, six miles from Polignano you come to Monopoli: crystal-clear waters, an adorable old town centre to be photographed from every angle and an ancient little harbour full of brightly coloured boats. Yes, precisely what I love to capture with my camera. It is hard for non-locals to find the ideal place for a dip in the sea. I recommend Cala Porto Bianco and Cala Porto Rosso (for food lovers, make sure you stop off at the ‘Porto Rosso’ restaurant too).

Travelling along the opposite coastline, on the Ionian Sea, you get to Taranto. I admit that I’m a bit biased when it comes to this area. I recommend that you visit Piazzale Democrate at sunset, to witness the ritual repairing of fishing nets, or, as in Bari, that you go down to the harbour at dawn. The old town is both a blessing and a curse for photographers: you fall in love with every corner of it. Houses without roofs or windows, the smell of laundry, the hanging washing, the sweltering heat, the shouts of children playing in the street… Taranto is like a beautiful woman: you forgive her everything.
